Garmi-e- dasht-e-karbala

Babar Ali Anees [ 1804- 1874]

Marsiya is a form of Urdu poetry in which death of someone is described, Ghalib has written marsiya on the death of his son laazim tha ki dekho mera rasta...   which is in the form of ghazal, Iqbal also wrote marsia on the death of his mother.
But the term  Marsiya is  generally used for the poems dealing with the tragedy of Karbala and events associated with it. The usual form of marsiya is four  lines of same radef/qaafiya and two lines of different radeef/qaafiya. The marsiya is well developed form of poetry. The intensity of pain and suffering described in a marsiya is unparallal in any other literture.  The marsia presented here is from the K. C. Nanda's book Masterpieces of Urdu Nazm it is and abridged version of the original.

Another reason for presenting marsiya is the war going on in Kosovo;                   ---- kashif
