    Hali was born in Panipat in 1837, he was educated in Arabic and Persian and for further educatio he came to Delhi. In Delhi he had some interaction with Mirza Ghalib. Eight years after the first war of independence in 1857 he moved to Lahore. There he lived for 4 years , he moved back to Delhi and died on 1st Januray 1915.
    The greatest acheivement of Hali was 'muqadama-e-sher-o-shaayari' , which laid the groundworks for the modern Urdu poetry. Aal Ahmed Sarwar called his muqadma "the first menifesto of the Urdu poetry."

    ai bazm-e-safeeran-e-dol key sukHan aara!
    har kHurd-o-kalaaN teri fasaahat peH fida hai
    [bazm-e-safeer= gathering of diplomats
    kHurd-o-kalaaN=micro and macro, fasaahat=sweet talk]

    yeh sach hai keH jaadoo hai bayaaN meiN terey, lekin
    kuchh sihar-e-byaani ka teri Dhang nayaa hai
    [sihar= magic ]

    zaahir hai naH gHussaH meiN bayaaN sey terey ranjish
    nay lutf meiN kuchh tarz-e-bayaaN iss sey juda hai
    [ ranjish = displeasure, lutf = beauty, grace]

    hai dil meiN nihaaN aik shikayat ka tumaar
    aur lab peH jo dekho, to naH  shikwa, naH gilaa hai
    [ tumaar = book, volume, shikwa = complains]

    jo sulah ki baateiN haiN, so haiN shahad sey sheereiN
    aur jaNg meiN kuchh lutf-e-sukHan iss sey siwaa hai
    [ sheereiN= sweet , lutf-e-sukHan= style of speech]

    gar sochiye to saikRhoN pahloo, haiN mafar key
    aur suniye to zanjiroN sey har qaul bandha hai
    [ saikRhoN= hundreds, mafar = points of deflection
    qaul = spoken words ]

    dil ko terey hoti nahiN maa'loom koi baat
    gooNga nahiN, goya nahiN, kya jaaniye kya hai?

    khulta nahiN kuchh iss key siwaa terey bayaaN sey
    ik murgH hai kHoosh lahjaaH, keH kuchh bol rahaa hai
    [ murgH = bird, kHoosh lahjaaH = pleasant voice]

    they lab pey izhaar, peH ab aakey khulaa yeh
    insaan ko akHfaa key liye nutaq milaa hai
    [ akHfaa = concealment, nutaq = power of speech]


    Nazm for this month was prompted by the Indian election and the political 'bayaan baazi' of all hues. It is amazing that this nazm still hold true even after 100 years.
