Majaz was one of the founders of the Progressive Writers Movement. He did believe in revolution, but he was by temprament a romantic person. He never advertised revolution in his poems but sang sweet songs of revolution that matched his personality.

He is a poet of love and revolution, but mostly love. A poet of nazms but he never wrote azaad nazms. His nazms maintained all parametres of the ghazals. His most famous nazm is awaara, which is considered one of the best urdu nazms. 
His other popular nazms are raat aur rail, andheri raat ka musaafir.
His first poetry collection aahang was published in 1938. shab-e-taab in 1945, and saaz-e-nau.
