Jaan Nisaar Akhter is father of famous lyricist Javed Akhtar. He married Safiya sister of Majaz. He was a teacher in a college in Bhopal. Later he moved to Bombay and wrote songs for the movies. 
He was awarded Sahitya Academy Award of India in 1976 for collection of his poetry khak-e-dil.
