Dr azam koraivi whose real name was Ansar Ahmad
was born at his native village named Korai in pargana Chail of distt Allahabad
in 1899. He was the descendent of Makhdoom Ismail Qureshi Al Hashmi of
Bamhrauli, Allahabad who is a grand son of Shaikh Bahauddin Zakaria of
Multan. His father Mr. Fayyaz Ahmad was an well to do zamindar of his area
therefore Azam's childhood passed very smoothly and merrily.
His village is situated on the bank of the
river Ganges and is a picturesque spot, naturally he was attaracted towards
its natural beauty and tranquility .He spent leisure time in watching the
beauty of nature around the village he himself has written on one occasion
that the natural surroundings of his village were one of the major factors
which motivated him towards poetry and literature.but more factually he
was a born beauty lover & poet. Saghar Nizami has written on one occasion
that Azam's way of talking, style of walking, his physique and his gestures
everything is shayrana[poetic].
Azam took his entrance exam in 1914 and who
can imagine that he started publishing a literary Urdu magazine from Allahabad
named "toofan" in 1918 which published upto 1921under the guidance
of famous poet Hazrat Nooh Narwi who was his ustaad in poetry. Again from
1925 to 1926 he was the editor of a standard urdu magazine "akbar"
which was published in memory of Syed Akbar Allahabadi by Anjuman Darul
Adab formed by Dr. Azam and his friends. This magazine was approved
by the British govt. for all the state liabries in the then United Provinces
of Agra and Oudh.
In beginning azam was a poet and attended
the mushairas also but when tarannum became more important than the ashaar,
Azam left attending mushaira and turned towards short story writing (afsana
nigaari). Azam spent his childhood in villages and had a great love for
villages and was of the opininon that villages should maintain their qualities
and peculiarities as villages and should not try to become
a town. Even he has complained in some of
his stories that villages are losing their original traits and qualities.
At that time Munshi
Premchand was also writing on the problems and life of indian villages
powerfully and impressingly therfore Azam followed him but he made his
own way in this field . His afsana can easily be differentiated with Premchand's
as Premchand's afsane were void of love and romance whereas Azam's
stories had a very deep and fine touch of
love. Azam Koraivi wrote more than 300 short stories in Urdu and is regarded
as a indispensable member of "Premchand school of afsananigaari."
He has in his name more than 13 story collections
apart from a lot of unpublished stories. He translated a lot of stories
from Gujarati, Bengali and Marathi into Urdu.
Some of his famous story collections are:-
1.shaikh o birahman aur doosre afsane 1942

6.hindustani afsane 1945
7.nae fasane 1946
8.hamare afsane 1945

Etc
He wrote two marvelous books on nazm also:
1. Dehati geet
In which he has collected and compiled the
folk songs and dehati songs which are not found in books, only on the lips
of dehatis for hundreds of years such as sawan ke geet. Kolhu ke geet,
shadi ke geet, chakki ke geet etc.it was a marvellous work done by him
which brought him wide fame and praise from the literary groups.
2 Hindi shayeri
He was awarded by the hindustani academy
in 1929 on a book named" hindi shayeri" in which he has compared the hindi
and urdu verses on some given topics. Azam served the indian army so he
travelled far and vide at that time in unified india and pakistan. After
partition he preferred to live in karachi, where he was shot dead in june
1955 when he was on his way to home after his daily morning walk.his death
was
related with some of his writings against
the oppression of the suppressed class and women.
